Fundamentals of Rotating Machinery Diagnostics — Review
In use through permission of Orbit Magazine.
Fundamentals of Rotating Machinery Diagnostics does an excellent job of explaining the basic principles of dynamics and diagnostics and showing you how to apply them to your machinery. It does so in a straightforward, intuitive manner, generously illustrated with color graphics and case histories, and not burdened with complex mathematics.
The book starts by describing the fundamentals of vibration and the plots that present the data in a meaningful way. It then describes the static and dynamic response of rotor systems using a basic dynamic model. Next it introduces the most common machinery malfunctions, including rotor bow, unbalance, misalignment, rub, and fluid-induced instabilities, and the response characteristics that you will use to identify them. Finally, it uses its appendices to derive and expand on important relationships introduced in the main text.
Each chapter of this book has been thoroughly reviewed by experts with many years of experience in machinery diagnostics. Case histories, which originated in the field with Bently Nevada machinery specialists, illustrate the critical diagnostic principles used on machines in a variety of applications: syngas compressor, draft fan, generator, electric motor, and pipeline compressor.
The book does more than help you understand your machinery, it helps you predict what caused a change in its operation, or predict what a change will cause to its operation. It gives you a solid foundation in the principles needed to solve machinery problems. No matter what new developments occur, the fundamental principles of rotor dynamics presented in this book will remain the same.
